Agribusiness Companies Can Learn to Unlock the Carbon Value of Emissions and Biofuels for Significant Profit

PRESS RELEASE

Alexandria , Va. , November 12, 2009 – The current debate over carbon emissions and biofuels presents numerous challenges, but also significant profit opportunities. “Agribusiness companies can learn to manage carbon trading activities and unlock the carbon value of biofuels,” Rick Gilmore, President/ CEO of The GIC Group (GIC) said in his opening remarks at a forum hosted by The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He indicated that biofuel companies can take advantage of any cap and trade system by monetizing the value of new mitigation technologies, offsets, and carbon trading.

“Venture capital investment in corn ethanol has trailed off, and a new generation of biomass-based biofuels will replace corn ethanol,” according to Gilmore. “New U.S. cap-and-trade legislation will give additional impetus to these investment trends, and present profitable trading opportunities for agribusiness.”

GIC, based in Alexandria, Virginia, has developed a carbon advisory practice for agribusiness and is launching two agriculture-specific carbon credit indices to serve as financial tools for agricultural entities to value emissions reductions and hedge carbon transactions.

“GIC’s Ag Carbon Index (GIC-ACI) c aptures the true worldwide footprint of agribusiness-related emissions, including the biofuel industry,” Gilmore said. He concluded by noting that, “Biofuel producers can quantify and value the carbon reduction potential of new production technologies and alternative uses for biomass. Producers can use the index to hedge the value of reduction technologies through futures.”

GIC and its partner, Clear Carbon -- a carbon consulting firm specializing in carbon measurement, management and mitigation -- are now offering emissions tracking and valuation services to biofuel companies for compliance with new EPA reporting requirements.
