Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDCAS) Clearinghouse Project in Latin America.
The clearinghouse combines several simultaneous activities that are designed to take a hands-on approach to sales
promotion and facilitation. With assistance from overseas associates, GIC will: 1) identify trade leads in Latin America; 2) disseminate information on sales opportunities to Virginia suppliers; and, 3) provide transactional advisory services to Virginia suppliers.

Trade Companies (ETC).
In order to make the Virginia apple industry more successful in servicing export markets, GIC recommended establishment of an ETC. An ETC would facilitate access to trade and/or working capital financing, add negotiating strength with shippers, and allow growers to share market information.
Marketing/Trade Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDCAS) Cuban Export Project in Latin America. GIC developed the Cuban market for Virginia products. The company advised
Virginia companies on techniques to sell products to Cuba. As a result, two Virginia companies sold several containers of fresh apples to Cuba. Cargoes will be shipped in January 2003. Other
contracts to be signed include chicken products, soybean oil and meal, wood products, pork, powdered milk, and Virginia wine.
Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) Strategic Plan. The GIC Group developed a strategic plan to increase Virginia exports in Latin American. The study showed
how Virginia products should be introduced to the Latin America markets. Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Brazil were selected as potential market targets.
Virginia Department of
Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDCAS) Investment Project in Latin America. GIC prepared an investment study for VDACS. The study included in-depth analysis of markets in Mexico, Dominican
Republic and Brazil. It showed how Virginia companies would develop joint ventures, acquisitions and strategic alliances with Latin America companies, generating access to new markets.
Export Sales and Import Procurement Policies for CONASUPO, Mexico. GIC conducted a market analysis for sorghum, recommending basis priced contracts for CONASUPO during a fixed period of the crop year. The methodology for the study entailed an analysis for futures and cash prices. A cost comparison model was developed to determine the net benefit of a flexible versus fixed price contract.
Appropriate Marketing Programs for Promoting American Agricultural Exports. General Accounting Office. GIC headed a review of alternative marketing mechanisms and worked with a panel of experts to develop appropriate new initiatives for legislators and policy makers. It assessed budget implications of market oriented farm programs on an ongoing basis and analyzed the market potential for higher value products from the U.S. to Asia.
Haryana Wholesale Market. State of Haryana. In conjunction with A. Epstein & Sons, GIC developed a logistical plan for a proposed 30 million ton per year Indian wholesale complex. Developed financing alternatives for the proposed market which included food processing facilities and an export center. Included domestic and international finance avenues, as well as income generation schemes.
Evaluation of Korea's Swine Program. An evaluation of the effectiveness of the U.S. Grains Council in ensuring pork production efficiency and viability in Korea, industry expansion, greater consumer trust and acceptance, and competitiveness of the industry in order to sustain or increase feed grain demand. The report assesses the Council's feed grain demand-building efforts in the swine sector and provides recommendations to the Council for future program direction.
Agro Advantage International Export Promotion. Maharashtra, India. GIC developed and promoted ten investment grade projects for the Agro Advantage project of the Government of the State of Maharashtra, India. Projects included a cold chain for fruit and vegetables export, a fruit and vegetable processing plant, an oleoresin extraction facility, a precision agriculture equipment manufacturing facility, a market information system (MIS) service, and an agro-hub port facility, as well as several biotechnology projects.
Japan's Changing Consumer Markets/Food Product Preferences Under Three Trade Policy Scenarios. Nomura. GIC's participation in this comprehensive study included trade impact analysis, and assessing the costs to consumers of different food products as a function of their imported price. Projections were provided under three scenarios -- greater trade liberalization, baseline, and more protectionism in Japan.
Project Finance, Spice Oleoresin Manufacturing Facility, India. GIC developed a business plan for the proposed $3.5 million plant to produce highest-quality oleoresins, pharmaceuticals, and natural dyes for export to the U.S. and India. GIC worked to secure private sector equity investors and long-term marketing agreements for the project.
Horticultural Marketing & Distribution Project: India. National Dairy Development Board & The World Bank. GIC developed a comprehensive fresh fruit and vegetable marketing system for six metropolitan centers in India. The 10 person team studied all aspects of the horticultural sector -- production, procurement, handling, transportation, storage, packaging, wholesale and retail marketing. This included the development of an institutional framework and a computerized database, conducting financial and economic analysis, defining trade needs, and generating designs/layouts of all necessary facilities.
Monthly Report on Agribusiness and Agricultural Developments. Private International Grain Trading Company. Agribusiness subsector analysis and corporate profiles of major agribusiness companies, along with monthly reports on agricultural policy developments and analysis of supply-demand conditions in the United States and selected competing major grain exporting nations. Information was drawn from various government and media publications and contacts in industry and government. Also coordinated transmittal of market sensitive information.
Agricultural Commercialization and Enterprise (ACE) Project. ICICI and The U.S. Agency for International Development, Maharashtra, India. The purpose of the ACE Project was to develop private sector-led investments, business services, and market structures for post-farm products in India's horticultural sector. The project provided loans, technical assistance, and trade and investment tours for private firms. The project assisted over 100 private firms in designing and/or implementing innovative projects related to post-farm horticultural investment.
U.S. Agricultural Technology Showcase, ACE Project. USAID & ICICI. This monthly bulletin focused on advancements in agricultural technology, aspects of and criteria for commercialization, machinery and equipment. The objective was to increase awareness of new agricultural technologies among Indian agribusiness firms; modernize the Indian agribusiness sector by commercialization of revolutionary technologies; increase demand for the services offered by the ACE Project to Indo-U.S. joint ventures; and increase technology transfer and machinery and goods export opportunities for U.S. companies. Global Market Analysis and Feasibility Study Assessment. Private Client. Analyzed price competitiveness for the product lines of a proposed U.S. $40 million horticultural products processing plant in North India. The plant produces frozen and canned vegetables and fruit juice concentrates. Developed containerization, transportation and tariff costs to targeted markets in the Middle East, Europe, the U.S., and Southeast Asian nations. Prepared overall marketing strategy and held preliminary negotiations with potential large-volume importers and brokers. Also evaluated capital and engineering cost outlays and made alternative recommendations. Private sector finance program prepared for the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank.
Rice Processing Mill Project. Private Sector Client, Punjab, India. Development of turn-around strategy including a debt restructuring plan for a composite rice mill with an estimated replacement value of U.S. $45 million. Helped to secure a Canadian buyer for the mill which underwent restructuring.
AHARA Show, New Delhi. U.S. Delegation. Leader of U.S. delegation of agribusinesses. Conducted outreach, promotion, matchmaking, and business development activities. Established contacts between U.S. firms and Indian companies in areas of food processing, equipment sales, joint ventures, agent representation, and import/export.
Trade & Investment Tour, ACE Project. USAID & ICICI. Trade and investment tour for 16 leading Indian industrialists visiting the U.S. The group attended two major agribusiness tradeshows and seminars. Tour also included visits to over 15 leading agribusiness companies, service and equipment suppliers, and research institutions. Participants were seeking joint ventures with U.S. companies.
Edible Oil Marketing and Distribution. Corn Products Corporation. Exclusive agent for the Indian market to introduce a new brand of corn oil. GIC is identifed and evaluated distributors for product launch.
