Global Food Safety Forum (GFSF) Kicks Off first USDA sponsored Workshop in Shanghai, November 8, 2010

 ASCIQ and the Ministry of Commerce joined USDA’s Foreign Agriculture Service representative in Shanghai to welcome Chinese company leaders to a GFSF workshop on livestock, poultry and meat safety issues. The “graduates” of the workshop received certificates that will qualify them as eligible suppliers for US food and feed products.

Presenters at the workshop included experts from Rabobank, Pfizer, NOVUS, Global Gap, GIC Group, and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture/ Dairy and Food Inspection Division. The session included two rounds of breakout sessions on the following topics:

  • Risk management strategies
  • Prevention of residues from veterinary medications/ chemicals
  • Food processing and retailer standards
  • International certifications
  • Sustainability criteria and safe packaging
  • New and emerging technologies

Future workshops will be scheduled on other food/ feed industries in different cities throughout China over the next year. “We’re delighted at attendance levels and grateful to the Chinese and US governments for all their support,” said Dr. Jianbo Lu. “Despite tremendous progress, there’s much work to be done. GFSF is committed to working with the private and public sectors to achieve a higher, uniform standard for food safety in China,” Lu concluded.
