Warm days, cool nights and a rich deep soil nurtured by consistent rainfall make Virginia ideal for growing many apple varieties.  Eleven major apple varieties are grown in Virginia:

Size

  • Variable and depends on the season, but the sizes available will be primarily 80 count, 88 count, 100 count, 128 count, 138 count, and 150 count, with a few 163 count, 175 count, 198 count, and 216 count. The size will be generally heavy to 88 count.

Trends

  • On the average, apple production in Virginia is approximately 400 million pounds a year. The latest Virginia apple and peach tree survey reports that the number of trees has increased by approximately 26%. The use of dwarf, semi-dwarf, and spur-type trees continued to climb. Virginia continues to increase its plantings of new varieties such as Fuji, Gala, and Ginger Gold.

Apple Products

Producing a quality product starts with quality apples.  VATC exports high quality apple products and meets USDA Grade A Fancy specifications.

VATC exports apple products such as applesauce, apple juice, apple cider, and apple butter. The applesauce is superheated under pressure to reduce the cooking time and allow for retention of the product's natural flavor and color.  Also, VATC trades unsweetened, chunky and flavored applesauce, as well as apple butter, packaged in a wide variety of containers.

The apple juice is cold-filtered and flash-pasteurized to maintain maximum flavor and aroma.

Apple Juice

  • 100% Apple Juice: 
  • Fresh apple taste in a bottle! Apples are carefully selected and blended to provide the fresh taste straight from the orchard. A great healthy, natural juice beverage that everyone enjoys drinking.

    Ingredients: natural apple juice.

  • 100% Apple Juice from concentrate: 
  • This apple juice is carefully made from selected apple juice concentrates to maintain the proper balance of tartness and sweetness.

  • Apple Cider: 
  • This sweet tasting cider is pasteurized apple juice from the first pressing of apples, blended to obtain a wonderful balance between nature's sugar and acid, which gives it a distinct, well balanced aroma and flavor.

  • Sweet Apple Nectar 100% Juice: 
  • This sweet apple nectar will be the juice of choice for those who like the natural taste of sweet apples. Besides all the natural health benefits that apple juice provides, apple nectar also has added vitamin C to further enhance this juice beverage.

    Ingredients: apple juice and apple juice concentrate

Sweet Apple Nectar 100% Juice is available in:

Applesauce:

  • Grade "A" Fancy Sweetened Applesauce: 
  • A smooth and sweet tasting applesauce that is made with just the right blend of fresh apples to bring the unsurpassed taste of apples fresh from the orchard.  Sweetened applesauce makes for a healthy snack or is a great addition to a meal.

    Ingredients: apples, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, water, and erythorbic acid

 Sweetened applesauce is available in:

      o Glass: 15 oz/425 g, 25 oz/708 g, and 50 oz/1.41 kg

      • Grade "A" Fancy Unsweetened Applesauce

    The fresh natural taste of apples can be found in this product.  No sweeteners are added for those people looking for a reduced calorie snack or meal addition, and it is also a fat free food.

Ingredients: apples, water, and erythorbic acid

Unsweetened applesauce is available in:

      o Glass: 14 oz/397 g, 25 oz/708 g and 50 oz/1.41 kg

      o Tin: 16 oz/453 g and 12 oz/3.06 kg

      o Plastic cup: 6 - 4 oz. Cups/sleeve (24 oz/680 g)

      • Grade "A" Chunky Applesauce

    A sweetened applesauce with the "chunky" consistency of fresh apples. Chunky applesauce consists of a blend of three different apple varieties that provide you with that extra special taste experience.

    Ingredients: apples, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, water, and erythorbic acid

Chunky applesauce is available in:

      o Glass: 24 oz/680 g and 25 oz/708 g 

      • Grade "A" Fancy Cinnamon Applesauce

    A sweetened applesauce with the "chunky" consistency of fresh apples. Chunky applesauce consists of a blend of three different apple varieties, which provides you with that extra special taste experience.

Cinnamon applesauce is available in:

Applesauce made from the sweetened tangy taste of fresh McIntosh apples.

McIntosh applesauce is available in:

      • Grade "A" Fancy Strawberry Applesauce

    Couple the taste of fresh apples with that of strawberries and you have a smooth and sweet tasting applesauce product that is very unique and excellent tasting.  This is a specialty food item that will truly satisfy the tastes of those who like apples and strawberries.

    Ingredients: apples, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, strawberry puree, natural flavor, water, vitamin C, and erythorbic acid

    The world's best tasting apple butter that is a gourmet item that can be used as either a fruit spread on breads or as a flavor item in many baking recipes.

Facts about Virginia Apple Industry

  • The Virginia apple industry contributes an estimated $235 million annually to the state's economy.
  • Virginia apples are destined for markets in 15 states and more than 20 countries.  Virginia apple export markets are Central America, Caribbean, Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Scandinavia, UK, and India
  • Virginia's fall apple harvest begins the last week in August and extends through early November. Summer varieties are harvested July through August. In Virginia, there are more than 250 commercial apple growers; nationally, there are 15,000 commercial growers.
  • An average of 8 to 10 million bushels of apples is produced annually by Virginia growers. American apple growers produce over 255 million bushels annually, which equals just over one bushel of apples per person in the United States.
  • Virginia apples are grown in more than 250 commercial orchards, on more than 18,000 acres of land.
  • Virginia apple growers produce many popular varieties including Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Rome, Stayman, Gala, Winesap, York, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Fuji, and Ginger Gold.
  • Virginia apple country includes the mountainous region of the northern Shenandoah Valley through the Roanoke Valley, the rich countryside of Albemarle and Rappahannock counties and the southwest counties of Patrick and Carroll. The majority of apples trees are grown in the Shenandoah Valley.
  • Virginia apple varieties require 90 to 175 growing days from spring bloom to fall harvest. From 1992 to 1997 over 1,880,000 new apple trees were planted in Virginia orchards. Depending on the type of rootstock, 100 to 500 apple trees are planted to the acre. In Virginia, the estimated commercial apple yield per acre is 700 bushels.
  • Seventy percent of Virginia apples are sold for processing and made into popular products such as applesauce, apple juice, apple butter, slices, and cider.

John Gohring

Title: Managing Director

As Managing Director, Mr. Gohring is responsible for VATC's marketing, sales, and logistical aspects of the export business. As a development economist, Mr. Gohring has expertise in monitoring and evaluation, agribusiness development, and SME financing. His in-country experience includes evaluating rural development projects and designing finance facilities for agricultural cooperatives. He also has home-office experience in program management and administrative support in the public and private sectors, and has conducted extensive quantitative research using data trend analysis and economic modeling. Mr. Gohring has an MA in Development Economics.

Robert Tisch

Title: Marketing Coordinator

Robert Tisch, VATC's senior analyst and marketing specialist, previously served for several years as the Deputy Director for Marketing, Horticultural & Tropical Products Division of the Foreign Agricultural Service/USDA. He was a prime mover in the establishment of the apple ETC.  His current responsibilities include development of the VATC strategic marketing plan and direct assistance to the members of VATC.
